Glass Mosaic and Stained Glass - Two day workshop Monday & Tuesday, August 12 & 13 - 10:00-4:00
Class description: This is an exciting new class that I have never offered before. I want to share some beautiful glasses that I was gifted. I taught this class for many years when teaching at Holderness Prep School and my students loved working with glass. Each student will design and construct a mosaic or stained glass composition using transparent and opaque glass from my extensive collection. We will begin the class discussing the principles of design, working with colored paper, and drawing and planning out your ideas. we will start with a powerpoint slide presentation of images that will hopefully inspire and inform your designs. A demonstration in cutting, snipping, grinding glass and soldering will be given and then students can start to build their artistic creations. Each student can choose to complete a mosaic or a stained glass design. If doing a mosaic, you will build your design on a wood substrate and if doing a stained glass creation you will create a hanging stained glass piece. When designing for a mosaic, the different pieces will be glued to a wooden substrate to hold them in place. The final step for a mosaic will be to set the glass permanently in place with colored mortar. If you prefer to work with stained glass, students will grind the edges of each piece, then wrap with copper foil and solder them together. Your design can be abstract and playful exploring colorful patterns, or realism, or exploring drawing on the wood substrate or using photos with transparent glass on top. I have a large selection of paints that can be baked on to the glass. The possibilities are endless. You will leave with a finished work of art to hang on your wall. Please bring magazine images, drawings ideas, photos or other sources of inspiration for your creation. Each student's design will be kept to a manageable size so that they can complete the project in 2 days.
